A supplier suggests a cheaper material. It may sound helpful, especially if you are trying to control cost. But cheaper material is only useful when the trade-off is clear.
What to ask
- What is the original material?
- What is the suggested replacement?
- How will appearance, weight or texture change?
- Will function or durability change?
- Does packaging or label need to change?
- How much does the price actually reduce?
Buyer rule
Do not approve a cheaper material only because it lowers price. Ask what value you are giving up.
